If you are looking for a fun and easy no-bake Halloween treat, here is one for you! These haystack cookies only have four ingredients (five if you add the decorating gel) and come together quickly.

These cookies were inspired by an old magazine clipping of a recipe from sometime in the 90s that I came across and I thought there were so fun.

Haystack cookies are made with crispy chow mein noodles melted chocolate (or other chips). You may see them around the holidays, but they are delicious and easy to make at any time of the year.

These chocolate haystack cookies are turned into werewolf paws by using slivered almonds to create claws. That's it!

Halloween recipes are always a favorite for me since it's my favorite time of the year. I love all the creative and spooky things people come up with.

What I really love about these werewolf paws are how simple they are to make. All you need to do is melt some chocolate and butterscotch chips and stir together with some crispy chow mein noodles, shape them, add the almond "claws", and let them dry.

The red decorating gel is an optional, but fun touch to these werewolf paws. These make them look like there is some blood on the claws and give them a bit more of a spooky Halloween feel.

I don't add the gel until before serving because it doesn't dry fully. I find it always stays sticky and that makes it difficult for storing or stacking them in a container.

If you want, you can change the chocolate in this recipe to milk or dark chocolate. Or, you can skip the butterscotch chips and use dark chocolate or peanut butter chips in their place. I love the flavor of the semi-sweet chocolate chips combined with the butterscotch chips.

Chocolate haystack werewolf paws are a great recipe for a Halloween party. Kids will enjoy them a lot. They are great for a spooky movie night as well - anytime you want an easy and fun Halloween themed treat!

Give these chocolate haystack werewolf paws a try this Halloween season! You'll be howling with how much you love them.

Of course, you can make these chocolate haystacks cookies without the almonds and red decorating gel to enjoy at any time of the year.

Chocolate Haystack Werewolf Paws

Classic chocolate haystack cookies are turned into a fun Halloween treat with some slivered almonds to look like claws. Add some red gel icing for an extra spooky touch.

Ingredients

  • 1 bag (12 oz.) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 can (5 oz.) chow mein noodles
  • 1 cup butterscotch chips
  • about 1/4 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 tube red decorating gel, optional

Instructions

  1. Add the chocolate chips to a microwave safe bowl. Melt the chocolate chips on high in 30-second intervals, stirring after each.
  2. When the chocolate is melted and smooth, stir in the butterscotch chips until melted (put in the microwave for another 30 seconds, if needed). Alternatively, you can melt the chocolate and butterscotch on the stove in a double boiler.
  3. In a large bowl, pour the chow mein noodles. Break them apart with your fingers slightly so that they are all about 1-inch in length.
  4. Stir in the melted chocolate mixture until combined.
  5. Scoop the mixture about 1/3 cup at a time onto a sheet of parchment or a silicone baking mat. Use a spoon to shape them into an rough oval shape.
  6. Place four slivered almonds into one end of each cookie for the claws.
  7. Let set and dry completely. Store in an airtight container for about 3-4 days.
  8. Add red decorating gel to the claws, if desired, before serving.
