Autumn calls for big pots of chili, hot bowls of soup, and slow cookers of stews. What better to go along with these cozy dinners than a loaf of bread.

This quick bread has a nice sweet and savory flavor combination that works nicely together and the thyme provides a nice herbal flavor.

This bread contains apple and cheddar along with some fresh thyme. I love using fresh thyme here as it reminds me of fall and I think it goes nicely with the apples. Plus, I'm always looking for different ways to use my herb garden herbs.

I use a sharp cheddar cheese for the best flavor. An orange cheese gives the bread that orange color, but a sharp white cheddar will work fine, too.

I prefer to use a sweet apple to compliment the savory and sharp cheese. Some sweet apples that would that work well in this bread are Gala, Honeycrisp, Crispin, Golden Delicious, Jonagold, or Fuji. I have not made this with a tart apple like Granny Smith.

How to make cheddar apple thyme quick bread

First you need a loaf pan and an 8" or 9" pan will work. Lightly butter the pan, or spray it with cooking spray to prevent sticking. Prepare your apples, cheese, and thyme so they are ready to add to the batter.

Then in a medium to large bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set this aside and move to the wet ingredients.

Next you need to cream together the butter and sugar. You can do this with a hand mixer, or a stand mixer.  Then mix in the eggs and milk until combined.

Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix until just combined. Last, add the apples, cheddar, and tyme and mix until they are just combined.

Then spread the batter evenly into your prepared loaf pan and bake. The batter is a bit dry, and this will vary on how juicy the apples are that you use.

This quick bread needs to cool before slicing so that it's not too moist in the middle and so it stays together. It's nice served still a touch warm with some butter, but room temperature will also be good.

I have made this bread with red apples and a lighter green apple, but I love using the red the best so you get those little flecks of pink-ish color throughout the bread.

This bread will fill your house with a lovely aroma of apples and thyme while it cooks giving those cozy autumn vibes.

Give this quick bread a try the next time you want to make a unique side dish for your pot of chili or soup. I think it would make a nice addition to Thanksgiving dinner as well, or a dinner like roasted chicken.
