Chocolate Chip Snowball Cookies are a perfect cookie to add to your holiday cookie trays, Christmas parties, and gift giving this year. They are simple to make and they are really yummy.

These cookies are a variation on these Mexican Wedding Cake Cookies that come from my great-grandmother.  The difference is that this version contains mini chocolate chips rather than toasted walnuts. Otherwise, they are the same base recipe.

I like to use mini chocolate chips; however, you can use regular size if you prefer. I like how the mini chips almost speckle the dough with little bits of chocolate. Here I use semi-sweet, but milk chocolate or dark chocolate will also make a delicious cookie.

One of my favorite things about these cookies is that they don't require many ingredients and they are ingredients that most people have around if they are doing Christmas and holiday baking.
All you need is flour, powdered (icing) sugar, butter, vanilla, salt, and the mini chocolate chips. Powdered sugar is one of those things that I buy and then I have around to use up as well. Cookies like these are a great way to use it because it's both in the dough and coats the cookies.
Plus, these cookies travel well and last for many days. This makes them a good choice for having around during the holidays to share with friends and family or to bring to a potluck or party.
Store these cookies in an airtight container and enjoy for several days to come. These little snowballs are sure to be a lovely addition to your holiday cookies this year.

Mini chocolate chips are nestled into these delicious little buttery cookies that are coated in powdered sugar to look like festive snowballs.

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup icing sugar, plus another 3/4 cup for rolling
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup semi-sweet mini-chocolate chips

  1. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  2. Cream together the butter and sugar in the bowl of your stand mixer with a paddle attachment or using a hand mixer. When it is light and fluffy, add the vanilla and continue to mix until combined.
  3. Turn the mixer to low and slowly add the flour and salt. Mix until just combined and then fold in the chocolate chips with a wooden spoon.
  4. Shape the cookies into 1 tablespoon balls, rolling in the palm of your hand. Place about 1/2-inch apart on the baking sheets. Bake for about 9-11 minutes, until the bottoms are just turning golden. Place the cookies on a wire rack and repeat until all the dough is used.
  5. When the cookies have cooled for about 10 minutes, gently roll them in a bowl with the remaining powdered sugar, shaking off excess.
  6. Return to the wire racks to fully cool.
