This lightly honey-sweetened and cheesy beer bread is easy and a delicious side dish to chilis, soups, and more! Homemade honey butter is the perfect topping.
Beer breads are such an easy way to make a delicious and quick load of bread to go with your dinner. I love to make a loaf on a cold weekend with a pot of chili. Beer and cheese are a perfect compliment to chili and in my opinion you can't have chili (or soup) without some kind of bread on the side. Also, to compliment to honey in this bread, I whipped up some honey butter for topping because, yum!
Use a light colored beer (I used a lager) that doesn't have a super strong flavor so you don't overpower the bread. I based my recipe off of this one because I was intrigued by the addition of melted butter into the baking pan which I don't usually do when I make beer bread. It turned out delicious and gives it a nice buttery crust. I used white cheddar cheese, but orange will also work fine; you just want it to be sharp or extra sharp so it is flavorful.
So the next time you are making soup or chili, make a loaf of beer bread to go along with it. Don't forget the honey butter!
Yield: about 8 (1 loaf of bread)
Honey Cheddar Beer Bread w/ Honey Butter
This lightly honey-sweetened and cheesy beer bread is easy and a delicious side dish to chilis, soups, and more! Homemade honey butter is the perfect topping.
ingredients:
For the bread
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup honey
- 1 bottle (12 oz.) beer
- 1 cup grated extra sharp white cheddar cheese
For the honey butter
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
- 1-1/2 tablespoons honey
- pinch of salt
instructions:
How to cook Honey Cheddar Beer Bread w/ Honey Butter
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Pour about two tablespoons of the melted butter into a 9"x5" loaf pan. Brush around to coat the entire pan (there will be a lot in the bottom).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the honey (if thick or at all crystalized, pop in the microwave for a few seconds so it is runny) and beer until almost combined. Add the cheese and stir until combined. Pour into the loaf pan. Brush the remaining melted butter on top.
- Bake for 45-55 minutes, until golden and an inserted toothpick comes out clean. Let cool for about 10 minutes then remove from the pan and cool for another 5 minutes. Slice to serve.
- While the bread bakes, prepare the honey butter by stirring all the ingredients together until well-combined. Set aside (you will probably have leftover butter, which is delicious on biscuits, your morning toast, etc.).
I hope you give this bread a try!
Now all I need is a bowl of steaming hot onion soup to go with this awesome beer bread for a GREAT lunch!
