Cinnamon & sugar soft pretzel bones #HalloweenTreatsWeek

Bowl of cinnamon and sugar soft pretzle bones.

Soft pretzels shaped into little bones and dipped into a cinnamon and sugar mix make a delicious and fun Halloween treat!

This post and recipe were created for #HalloweenTreatsWeek! I was sent samples by some of the sponsor companies to help in recipe development, but as always all opinions are 100% my own.

Do you like soft pretzels? I do and making them at home really isn't super complicated. These ones are perfect for your next Halloween party or gathering because they are shaped like spooky bones! These pretzels are coated in a mixture of cinnamon and granulated sugar from Dixie Crystals.

And if that's not enough, I also served them with some Litehouse Chocolate Dip Singles so we all had our own little container of dip for a few pretzels! They were definitely a big hit and the kids especially thought they were fun.

When making these pretzels, you have to be prepared that every single one may not look exactly like a bone, or exactly alike. It takes some practice and you have to over-exaggerate the shape of the ends to make sure they keep shape during the baking process. It takes a little practice, but you get the hang of it as you go along.

These pretzels are a super fun treat for any Halloween party or a Halloween family movie night. They are best eaten the day they are made, because the cinnamon and sugar coating will start to "melt" a bit if they sit in a container. These homemade pretzels are also best when they fresh and warm, so plan to make these when you have enough people to eat them.

I hope you are enjoying #HalloweenTreatsWeek as much as I am! Don't forget to enter the giveaway at the bottom of this post and check out all of today's other Halloween recipes!

Cinnamon & Sugar Soft Pretzel Bones

Soft pretzels shaped into little bones and dipped into a cinnamon and sugar mix make a delicious and fun Halloween treat!

ingredients:

For the dough
  • 1 cup milk (I use 2%)
  • 2-1/4 teaspoons (1 envelope) dry active yeast
  • 3 tablespoons lightly packed light brown sugar
  • about 2-1/4 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for kneading
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon salt
For the baking soda bath
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 2-1/2 cups warm water
For the coating
  • 4 tablespoons melted unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

instructions:

How to cook Cinnamon & Sugar Soft Pretzel Bones

  1. First make the dough. Warm the milk on the stove top or microwave until just warmed. Pour into a marge bowl and stir in the yeast. Let sit for about 3 minutes. Stir in the brown sugar, 1 cup of flour, and the softened butter. Stir in the salt and the remaining 1-1/4 cups of flour until combined (you may need slightly more or less flour - you want a tacky dough).
  2. Knead the dough on a lightly flour surface for about 5-7 minutes, until the dough is smooth. Shape the dough into a ball and place in a lightly greased bowl covered with a kitchen towel. Let rise for one hour.
  3. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees and line two baking sheets with parchment or silicone baking mats.
  4. Pinch off a piece of dough about 2 tablespoons at a time (or break into about 20 pieces and keep them under a kitchen towel. Roll each piece into a rope shape between your hands. Then flatten out both sides on each end. You want to over-exaggerate the bone shape to make sure it holds while baking.
  5. Stir together the baking soda bath in a pie plate. Dip each pretzel bone into the baking soda mixture.
  6. Place the pretzels on the baking mat and bake about 6-9 minutes, until golden brown.
  7. Mix together the sugar and cinnamon mixture in another pie plate.
  8. Brush each hot pretzel with the melted butter when it is done baking. Then dip the tops in the cinnamon and sugar mixture. Set on a wire rack.
  9. Continue until all the dough has been used. Eat warm and dip into chocolate dip, if desired. Pretzels are best enjoyed warm and on the day they are made.
