Foil packet grilled maple cinnamon sweet potatoes

Finished sweet potato foil packet with a spoon.

Sweet and sticky sweet potatoes coated with maple syrup and spiced with cinnamon and a touch of cayenne pepper are a delicious grilling side dish. They are simple to make in a foil packet and packed with flavor.

Grilling season is here and we've been eating outside more often. While we frequently make our meats and main dishes on the grill, sometimes I'm still inside also making some side dishes. So, one of my favorite things to do is also grill up some vegetables or potatoes on the grill too and foil packets are an easy way to do this.

Sweet potatoes are a favorite of mine for grilling because they pair well with barbecue sauce. We like these sweet potatoes along with grilled pork or chicken that we've brushed with some barbecue sauce. I'll often add another foil packet with asparagus, green beans, and/or heat up some baked beans for a complete dinner.

Maple and cinnamon are perfect flavors to go with sweet potatoes and they are flavors we enjoy all year round. The flavors add a contrasting sweetness to a spicy or tangy barbecue. And adding a touch of cayenne pepper to the sweet potatoes also makes them extra flavorful and not overly sweet.

To make these sweet potatoes, you simply peel and slice them and then toss them in a bowl with the maple syrup and spices. Then you place them on two pieces of foil that have some olive oil to prevent sticking, wrap, and grill.

Raw sweet potatoes being placed onto the foil.

Place one 18-20 inch sheet of foil crosswise (left to right) on the counter and then place another sheet of the same size or slightly larger in the middle of this first but lengthwise (up and down). Drizzle the middle of the top sheet of foil with a couple teaspoons of olive oil.

Then you place the prepared potatoes on the olive oil section and wrap them with the top piece of foil and then the bottom piece. You want to packet to be fully closed so it doesn't open and spill on the grill. If it's not secure enough, you can use one more piece of foil to wrap around the whole packet.

These sweet potatoes are also great for a camping side dish whether you are grilling or using the campfire. Foil packets are perfect for campfire cooking whether you have a grill grate to place on the fire or you can place the packets down into the coals. Cooking times will vary this way, but it's another option.

Foil Packet Grilled Maple Cinnamon Sweet Potatoes

Foil Packet Grilled Maple Cinnamon Sweet Potatoes

Sweet and sticky sweet potatoes spiced with cinnamon and a touch of cayenne pepper are a delicious grilling side dish. They are simple to make and packed with flavor.

Ingredients

  • olive oil
  • about 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 lbs sweet potatoes
  • 1/4 cup real maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • dash of cayenne pepper, optional
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat your grill to medium heat.
  2. Place an 18-20 inch sheet of foil on the counter crosswise/left to right. Then place another 18-20 inch sheet on top of it in the center, facing up and down/lengthwise. Drizzle the center of the top sheet with a couple teaspoons of olive oil.
  3. Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them into about 1/4-inch rounds. Place them into a large bowl.
  4. In the bowl add another drizzle of olive oil, the maple syrup, cinnamon, cayenne, a good pinch of salt, and a few grinds of black pepper. Stir well.
  5. Place the sweet potatoes onto the oiled part of the foil packet. Fold over the top sheet of foil first and then the bottom, making sure to secure and close the entire packet. Wrap with another piece of foil, if needed.
  6. Place to packet on your grill and close the grill lid. Flip the packet after 10 minutes and then cook for another approximately 10 minutes, until the potatoes are soft. You can check by piercing the packet with a grill fork or by removing and opening.
  7. Open the packet carefully as it will be hot and steamy. Serve hot and season with a bit more salt, if needed.

Notes:

Cayenne pepper adds a nice dash of heat to the sweet potatoes and maple syrup. Add more or less to your tastes, or you can leave it out. A dash of chiptole chili powder or smoked paprika would also work well.

    1. Yes, I think the oven would be fine. I've never tried it, but I'd probably use 375/400 F. Thanks!
