Oogie Boogie dark chocolate brownies #HalloweenTreatsWeek

The villain from the classic The Nightmare Before Christmas movie, Oogie Boogie, tops these dark chocolate brownies in a green frosting form for a fun and festive Halloween dessert or movie night surprise.

Disclosure: This post and recipe was created for #HalloweenTreatsWeek. I was sent samples by the sponsor company, but as always opinions are my own.

I'm super excited to share these Oogie Boogie dark chocolate brownies today! Every year for #HalloweenTreatsWeek I come up with an idea that I'm not quite sure I'm going to be able to pull off.

I'm not a professional baker and I'm not always sure that my ideas will work. I love getting to play around in the kitchen with these fun Halloween ideas and seeing what happens.

That was the case for these brownies. I wasn't quite sure they'd turn out like that I was envisioning in my head, but they turned out pretty great! I was so happy with the end results and so were my kids. I made these for dessert before we had a Halloween movie night.

These brownies are the base brownie recipe I use a lot. For this version, I used dark chocolate cocoa powder so that they were darker in color for Halloween. You can use regular baking cocoa is you prefer.

I used store-bought frosting for this recipe to save time and makes things a little easier and a gel green food coloring to achieve the bright green color. Homemade is also fine, of course. Gummy worms add a touch of fun as well.

The trick to these is making sure your frosting stays cool when you are working with it so that when you are piping it on, it doesn't start to soften too much. Otherwise the Oogie Boogie heads will start to lean over. I also tried to make a longer "point" at the top of each head and this only works if your frosting is firm.

I worked in batches, making two or three at a time and then placing them in the refrigerator to firm up and hold their shape. Also, keep your frosting bowl in the refrigerator in between piping bag refills (or pop the piping bag in the refrigerator every once in a while, if needed).

As I always stress, these are homemade and they do not need to look "perfect" at all. You can see that all of mine are a different shape and that not all the faces are perfectly drawn on each one. That's more than okay! These are for fun!

Lastly, I used a small tube of black fine-tip decorating gel to draw on the eyes and mouth. I stored these finished Oogie Boogie brownies in a deep baking dish so that I could put plastic wrap on top without smooshing the frosting.

Note: You need not decorate all of the brownies. Each one does contain a lot of frosting, so it's up to you. Do a few and then just cut up the rest on a platter and add the gummy worms, or if you are frosting lovers, go for it and do them all! If you do them all, you may need two container of frosting

Oogie Boogie Dark Chocolate Brownies

Oogie Boogie Dark Chocolate Brownies

The villain from the classic The Nightmare Before Christmas movie, Oogie Boogie, tops these dark chocolate brownies in a green frosting form for a fun and festive Halloween dessert or movie night surprise.

Ingredients

  • 2 sticks unsalted butter, plus more for greasing
  • 3/4 cups sugar, such as Dixie Crystals
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup dark chocolate cocoa powder
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • store-bought vanilla frosting (may 2 containers to do all the brownies depending on the size of your Oogie Boogies)
  • green gel food coloring, such as this Wilton in "leaf"
  • black decorating gel, such as this tube from Wilton
  • gummy worms, optional

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Set aside to cool slightly.
  2. Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment so it overhangs two sides. Then butter the parchment and any pan that is exposed. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  3. Add the sugar, eggs, and vanilla into the saucepan with the melted butter. Stir with a wooden spoon until combined.
  4. Add the cocoa, flour, salt, and baking powder. Stir with a wooden spoon until smooth. Pour into the baking pan and spread the batter evenly.
  5. Bake for about 35 minutes, until the edges are peeling away from the pan and an inserted toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let the brownies cool completely and then cut into squares (15-18 brownies) and place on the counter or large cutting board. 15 brownies will give you more work space for making the Oogie Boogie, 18 will make smaller brownies.
  7. Start with one container of frosting and transfer it to a small bowl. Add a few drops of the green gel color and stir with a metal spoon. Keep adding a few at a time and stirring until you achieve your desired color. Pop the bowl in the refrigerator for a few minutes.
  8. Fill an 8-inch piping bag to the fill line with prepared frosting. Begin to pipe in a swirling motion about three times around, getting smaller with each turn and trying to get a "point" at the top. Do this on each brownie you want frosted.
  9. Put the brownies in the refrigerator for a few minutes, then use the black decorating gel to draw on the face. Place the brownies into a deep pan so that the frosting tops are not disturbed. Cover with plastic wrap. You can use a few toothpicks as well to help hold up the plastic wrap from the brownies. Refrigerate until serving.
  10. When ready to serve, add gummy worms, if desired.
