Taco dip is something I remember showing up at almost all parties and summer potlucks and cookouts through my childhood. I hadn't had this layered taco dip in years and recently started making it again. My family loves it and it's as delicious as I remembered.

This is a five layer taco dip that I remember having as a kid. It doesn't contain beef, beans, or guacamole like many layered taco dips often do. It's an easy, flavorful, basic dip.

This taco dip has five layers consisting of a cream cheese and sour cream base that is seasoned with taco seasoning mix.

Bottom cream cheese and sour cream dip layer.

On top is shredded lettuce, then diced tomatoes, followed by shredded taco cheese, and then topped with sliced black olives.

I use a pre-shredded taco cheese blend that you can find in most grocery stores. It has taco seasoning on the cheese and adds extra flavor to the dip.

You can use a pre-shredded Mexican cheese blend instead if you prefer (this one will not have the extra taco seasoning, but still have a tasty mix of cheeses). Either of these will make a delicious dip.

I also add some thinly sliced green onions to the top and a drizzle of taco sauce. These are optional, but add a nice touch of color and flavor.

Then it is covered and chilled for a couple of hours until serving with tortilla chips. Use the tortilla chips to scoop up the dip, making sure to get some of each layer on your chip.

Layered taco dip is a bit customizable as well. For example, you can use 1 tablespoon of taco seasoning if you want it a bit milder, or you can add the entire packet for a bit more spice and flavor. You can add more or less lettuce and/or tomatoes if you desire.

Also, you can use the green onion and taco sauce as I do in this recipe, or you can skip those. I love a bit of thinly sliced green onion tops for their mild onion flavor and the bit of green color they add on the top.

The taco sauce adds more taco flavor that we enjoy. You can use mild, medium, or hot taco sauce depending on who is eating it and what they enjoy.

Or, have the taco sauce on the side that people can add if they so choose. You can have hot sauce on the side as well if you like.

I like to put out a serving spoon with this layered taco dip so that people can take what they want and then dip from their own plate, rather than dip directly into the serving dish.

Give this easy layered taco dip a try for your next game day, movie night, potluck, or party. It's always a hit and sure to disappear.
